I would highly recommend that you read the System 7 Pack! documenation. It includes comprehensive information on every feature of the System 7 Pack! and System 7 Pack! Extras Control Panel.
But for those of you who would rather just jump in, here's some quick information:
INSTALLATION:
Drag the System 7 Pack! Extras Control Panel into the System Folder.
The System 7 Pack! is an application and can be stored anywhere on your hard drive.
BEFORE RUNNING THE SYSTEM 7 PACK! APPLICATION:
Please take these two quick steps.
1) Make a backup copy of your Finder. It's really easy to do, just open your System Folder and select the Finder file. Then, hit command key-D to duplicate the Finder. That way you’ll have a backup in case of power outs or any other strange behavior. It's always better to be safe than sorry, and this step only takes a few seconds.
If your Finder is ever damaged in any way, you can then always return to a fresh Finder by dragging the Finder file into the trash and renaming the Finder Copy file to "Finder" without the quotes.
2) Turn off all virus programs before running the System 7 Pack. The System 7 Pack! modifies the Finder, and some virus programs will not allow the System 7 Pack! to do this. The easiest thing to do is just to turn off all virus programs, or better yet, restart your Mac with the shift key held down to turn off all extensions. You’ll only have to run without your virus programs or extensions when making changes with the System 7 Pack! Once your changes are completed, you’ll be able to turn them back on. This is also good advice for any installation program that you use. It solves a lot of problems with installation utilities.
3) The System 7 Pack! will send a 'quit' AppleEvent to the Finder to close it so that it can change it. Your desktop will disappear then when you run the System 7 Pack! This is completely normal, but many users are surprised to see it happen. Your Finder will return once you've quit all applications. If you run the System 7 Pack! alone, quitting the System 7 Pack! will return the Finder. Also, remember that the Print Monitor, File Sharing, and some other programs that you do not think of as applications are indeed applications. So if they are open, the Finder will not return until you quit them.
If you have an application launcher utility open (such as my own QuickFinder, a part of the System 7 Companion Pack!), you can then launch the Finder directly without having to quit all open applications.)
THE SYSTEM 7 PACK! EXTRAS CONTROL PANEL:
1) Hot keys can be changed at anytime without rebooting, although you will, of course, have to reboot after installing it for the first time so that it gets loaded at startup time.
2) The accelerated Empty Trash, ShutDown, Restart, and Sleep commands will work in all AppleEvent aware applications since they use AppleEvents to "speak" with the Finder. If you have any problems with them, try using them in another application. The other features should work in all applications, even if they are not AppleEvent aware.
